On 14th October 2022, at Bukoova Primary school in Bukoova Town Council Bukooma Subcounty, in Luuka District, Cultural Research Centre (CRC) launched a Functional Adult Literacy Programme. The programme was to be conducted in 10 villages namely; Bunafu, Idoome, Bulike, Kirimwa, Budhuuba, Bukoova, Bukooma, Naigobya, Bukyangwa and Gwembuzi. This launch was attended by Cultural Research centre staff headed by its CEO, Rev Fr. Richard Kayaga Gonza, the LC V chairperson of Luuka, Mr. Simon Peter Wakaze, the LC III Chairperson of Bukoova Town Council, Mr. Wilberforce Ntumba and was presided over the the Isabalangira of Luuka Chiefdom, Omulangira Eng. George Inhensiko. At the function, our friends at the African Bicycle Sponsorship Project offered bicycles to each of the 10 instructors at a subsidized price. The programme then officially kicked off on its 3-year journey.
On 28th June 2025, this three-year journey came to an end with a graduation ceremony where 277 learners that had successfully partaken in the programme were awarded certificates of completion. These had acquired knowledge through five modules; these were Reading and Writing, Numeracy/Arithmetic, Hygiene & Sanitation, Agriculture & Animal husbandry and Current Affairs/Civic Education.
Having presided over the inception of the programme, Omulangira Eng. George Inhensiko came back to preside and hand over certificates to the successful learners. He thanked CRC for bringing the initiative to Luuka chiefdom and urged the learners to continue putting in practice what they had learnt throughout the 3-year course. He decried the growing poverty levels that he attributed to illiteracy and urged the learners that having been taught about modern ways of farming, they should use the knowledge acquired to grow more food crops for healthier families as well as selling off the remainder for household income.
